Today is World Suicide Prevention Day 2024. This is an important awareness day that has been held annually since 2003 in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world.
Suicide is a sensitive topic for many; it is estimated that there are more than 700,000 suicides per year, and we know that each suicide profoundly affects many more people. Suicide remains a critical global issue, affecting individuals and communities worldwide.
There is now a triennial theme for the next three World Suicide Prevention Day’s between 2024-2026. This multi-year campaign focuses on "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action "Start the Conversation". This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides.
Changing the narrative on suicide aims to inspire individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to engage in open and honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of understanding and support.
Start the conversation today. Every chat, no matter how small, builds a more supportive and understanding society. Together, we can make a difference and prioritise suicide prevention, ensuring everyone gets the help they need.
